The development of ice hockey started in the early 40th. The leading hockey club, which has changed its name several times (“Torpedo”, “Spartak”, “Burevestnik”, “Krasnoe Znamya”, “Vympel”, again “Torpedo”, “Dinamo”, “Tivali”) presented Minsk in the Championship of Soviet Union and Youth Hockey League. Later on teams from Gomel (“ETZ”), Bobruisk (“Start”), Grodno (“Progress”, “Neman”) and Novopolotsk (“Khimik”) also have taken part into all-USSR Tournaments. Starting from the 1992/93 season National Championship of Belarus is held. National clubs together with teams from Ukraine, Russia and Baltic countries made up the base of Eastern European Hockey League (EEHL). In 2004 EEHL ceased to exist and Belarusian Hockey Federation (BIHA) started to hold Belarusian Open Championship. Pending 2009/10 season 11 Belarusian teams, 2 clubs from Latvia and 1 club from Ukraine took part in the Championship.
In early 90th there were only 3 indoor rinks (2 in Minsk, 1 in Novopolotsk). Today there are 24 arenas. Among them is Minsk-Arena, the largest one in CIS (15 000 seats).
BIHA was founded in March 6, 1992. On May 6, 1992 BIHA became the member of International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Evgeni Ankuda was the first BIHA Chairman. Later on this position was held by Lev Kontarovich and Yuri Borodich. From 2001 till 2009 Vladimir Naumov was the Chairman of the main hockey organization in Belarus he was also named – BIHA honorable Chairman. In March 2010 Evgeni Vorsin was elected to the position of Chairman.
