Belarus U18 team
The Belarusian junior hockey team's history is not a long one and has had many ups and downs over the last sixteen years.
After the Soviet Union collapsed, the junior teams of the newly founded independent republics were invited to play in the IIHF World U-18 Championship of 1993, C-Pool. Belarusian juniors promoted promptly. Once the team got to top pool in 1995, it lost all the three games in the preliminary round (against Sweden, Finland and Switzerland). In the elimination round, however, the team had a tie with Norway to end up in 7th place overall, thus keeping their place in the top pool.
At the 1996 IIHF World U-18 Championship in Russia, the team finished in the last position and they were relegated to the Division I in the next year.
By April 1999, our juniors were promoted to the 2000 IIHF World U-18 Championship. At this tournament once again finished the last and were relegated again.
In 2001 Belarusians demonstrated outstanding results in B-Pool and were back to the world's elite for the period of three years. Since the fall with the only victory against Norway in 2004 IIHF World U-18 Championship the team has been in the Division I with the jump up to the top pool in 2006.
5th place in 2002 IIHF World U-18 Championship in Slovakia is the Belarusian junior team's best result so far. That year such strong players as Konstantin Zakharov, Andrei Kostitsyn, Mikhail Grabovsky and Timofei Filin took part in the event, gaining precious experience of playing in the world's elite. Over the last few years they have been engaged to the national team.
The team is young and promising. Eight players (b. 1989) were the part of the 2006 junior team and have the experience of participating in the top pool tournaments. They surely have hunger for victories, because the team was relegated after not having won the game against Norway in which they had 3:0 after the first and 5:2 after the second period. Juniors will be very determined at the event in Slovenia, because their only goal will be to join the world's elite.
Some of the players compete in Belarusian Extraleague, other in the farm clubs. Perspective players include Mikhail Stefanovich and Dmitry Korobov, who played for U-20 team this year.
Nowadays more and more ice rinks are being built in Belarus and young teams are strongly supported both by the government and club authorities. The development of young players is one of the highlights of the measures taken. We therefore hope that in some period of time the number of skilled talented young players in our country will much increase.
